Custom Cabinets or Stock Cabinets

You may be wondering, what’s the difference between stock cabinets and custom cabinets. What about semi- custom?

Why are there so many types of cabinets? What makes kitchen cabinets different from each other?

Stock cabinets

cherry custom cabinets Eden Pararie MNThese are cabinets that are built in the sizes that get used most often. For some jobs these are great because they are already made and inexpensive in relation to other cabinet choices. What you might not like is they sometimes need wood fillers to make them fit into your kitchen. A wood filler is a 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 inch piece of wood to fill in the space you have left over.

Benefits – less expensive, usually fast to get, and some stock cabinets are very well made.

Cons – may need filler strips (which are obvious), fewer styles of doors and finishes. Less efficient storage. Fewer cabinet choices.

Remodeling during a Minnesota winter

Why remodel in the winter?

It’s cold, it’s snowy and it’s not spring which is the perfect time to add onto your home right?

Wrong!

Over the years I have had people tell me they want to wait for spring to remodel, that’s best because why? You get to slip around in the mud, you get to have the chance of rain on your new project?

Here’s the top 10 reasons to remodel in the winter.

Bloomington addition - winter construction

  1. Remodeling slows so you get more attention
  2. Suppliers have inventory so fewer wait times for materials and products
  3. Subcontractors are better able to meet your needs

Home Addition – What type is right for your home?

Minnesota remodeling can be challenging, during the long cold winter a Twin Cities remodeling contractor must time his projects well. Room additions are especially challenging because of weather conditions. Materials must be protected, walls and windows that are removed must be filled back in the same day. Regardless of the season remodeling presents challenges.

Summers bring rain, heat and insects. Winter brings snow and cold snappy weather. So why add a room?

Lets look at the types of additions homeowners ask for and how they are all additions and why they are all different.

The Mudroom

This is your better entry into the home, children and pets have a good leave and entry place here. A well constructed mudroom acts as a weather barrier to the main living areas, its a place to hang and store the seasons clothing and you can leave your boots and shoes out of the way but easy to find. Good design is key for good traffic flow and storage.

The dormer

Above garage home addition - Burnsville MNThis is a roof top addition, you can add a bath or a bedroom easily and its a very cost effective way to add space on your upper level. Stay Put and Remodel

Many homeowners now staying put and remodeling

Have you outgrown your small home, but you’re staying put for financial or economic reasons? Or maybe you recently bought a house in foreclosure that was a great deal, but needs fixing up.

If so, you’re part of the re-energized remodeling market. For the first time since 2006, home-improvement spending is up, according to the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University.

The surge is being aided by lower materials costs. And with more custom builders swapping out their blueprints for hammers to get in on the remodeling boom, labor costs have fallen in many areas as well.

In short, this is a great time to remodel, and if a new bathroom is on your wish list, you’re not alone. A recent survey conducted by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) showed that 28 percent of responding architects are seeing greater interest in kitchen and bath remodels.

Most homeowners aren’t going for dazzle, however. AIA reports that typical bath projects today reflect practicality and a desire to control utility costs. Although people tend to add or improve bathrooms with comfort and convenience in mind, these projects are also smart values. Read More »

Four ways to improve your home’s beauty and resale value

In a tough housing market, homeowners want to improve their home’s beauty and functionality, while adding resale value. This may include choosing products that reduce maintenance, save energy, improve appearance and offer protection from the damaging forces of nature. Here are some tips for problem areas that could benefit from the latest home solutions:

Timeless decks with natural looks

In the past decade, alternatives to wood decking products have made many claims of low-maintenance. However, if your deck has stains and is in an environment that breeds mold and mildew, maybe it’s time to look at some new options on the market. If your decking product contains wood fibers, it may be absorbing stains and getting scratched in everyday use.

“There are low-maintenance products that give homeowners a rich selection of deeper deck shades, tropical hardwood looks and durable, sturdy railings that complement these colors,” says Mike Gori, deck expert for AZEK Building Products, maker of AZEK Deck. He says the secret is cellular PVC technology, which resists food stains – even red wine – and stands up to the most high energy kids, dogs or neighborhood deck parties. Low-maintenance decks also increase your home’s value because they economically add living space and are easy to clean.
